Are peptides legal in the UK?

There is no single 'peptide law'. Each compound sits somewhere on a spectrum: licensed UK medicine, prescription-only medicine, unlicensed compound marketed as 'research only', or a cosmetic peptide. Are research peptides legal in the UK?

Many 'research peptides' are not licensed medicines for human use. UK rules look at how a product is presented and intended to be used, not just the label. 'Research only' labelling does not by itself make human-use marketing lawful. Personal possession is a different question from supply or advertising.

Can I buy peptides online in the UK?

Accepted Answer

It depends on which peptide and from whom. UK prescription-only medicines (semaglutide, tirzepatide, liraglutide) require a UK prescription and a regulated pharmacy. Unlicensed 'research peptides' sold by online retailers carry serious safety and regulatory risks — and we do not recommend specific sellers.

Are GLP-1 medicines like Ozempic and Mounjaro prescription-only in the UK?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy), tirzepatide (Mounjaro), and liraglutide (Saxenda, Victoza) are UK prescription-only medicines (POM). Lawful access is via a registered prescriber and regulated pharmacy.

It is a labelling convention used by some sellers to signal a product is not being sold as a medicine. UK regulators consider the wider context — presentation, marketing claims, intended purpose — when deciding whether something is a medicinal product. 'Research only' is not a legal defence on its own.

It signals the seller is not pitching the product as food or medicine. It does not change whether the product is a regulated medicinal product, nor does it remove safety issues from grey-market supply.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence assesses whether medicines are clinically and cost-effective enough to be funded by the NHS. For licensed medicines such as semaglutide or tirzepatide, NICE guidance shapes who can access them on the NHS.
